Sharni:I too missed all of you at the time you all were in Patiala, having a gala time. My soul was there all the time. Batish made me feel at place with all the snaps he sent me. It was really rejuvinating seeing all classmates in group.

Tara:It was such a pleasure to hear from you. I wish I could come and join all for this landmark celebration. My memories of days spent at GOMCO land are ever fresh, seem like yesterday. But for me it is challenging to take such a long trip. I did not leave India and my friends 15 years ago not to visit them, so you are all very dear to my heart and hope you accept my best wishes.

I would extend an invitation to ALL to come and visit me and stay with me whenever they wish.Sorry I did not respond earlier as I did not know exactly what to say.

Simmi Singh: The fun,joy and the pleasure of meeting everyone (some on them after more than 20 years) was beyond measure.It was so good and satisfying to know that all of us are doing well in life and are well settled.
Just cannot thank enough to all the organizers in Patiala for putting up such a wonderful and a life long memorable show. At this point I will also thank the families of all the organizers for their support without which this would not have been possible.

also i must acknowledge and thank everyone for the extreme fondness and warmth the kids felt too during the two days...we all of course had the time of our lives...but that the kids enjoyed themselves too is quite an achievement ...thank you all for making that happen!!

Harmeet: It was a walk down the memory lane..some people had not changed at all(RD), some had gained some prosperity(Gurbir) and some foxed us with their appearances( Navjot Walia, Harkirat Singh, Davinder Dhanda, Abhay Malhotra, Mala, Neeru, Suman) and some were lost in the fog(Mahesh Ahuja) and some to the global meltdown(Chugh and Balram)and some in Sands of time( Nanha,Ranjit, Epheraim,Balbir Kaur,Harjeet)

Satbir: Our reunion was a great success. Mohi, Battu, Kansal, Harmeet, Khalsa ,Walia and Gitanjali put all their efforts to make this 'once-a-life-time-show' a great success. Thank you very much.We along with our families enjoyed very much , had great interactions and fun.
LONG LIVE OUR BATCH AND LONG LIVE OUR SUCH FRIENDS.

Dilpreet: A big thank you to everyone who made “Tryst” possible… it was an amazing two days!!
The best thing for me was the ability to be myself and not get the feeling of being judged….of being able to dance like no one is watching…and sing like no one is listening…. right Gogia???? ….my God ….lord I am 500 miles away from home…for everyone who wasn’t there and for the folks who had left…Gogia sang this number with Chinkoo…and I joined him too…gosh!! it was fun and of course Mohi was called upon to retrieve the situation…after I started singing too….

Another really warm feeling was to see everyone little ones growing up so beautifully…Mohi’s son, Geetanjali, Ranjana and Minakshi’s daughters…. little replicas walking around …..

Battu: It sure was fun unlimited for 2 days..........and your presence added too its worth...

Chinkoo: It was in deed very nice to meet a few and see the other batch mates in the re union. Kansal ,battu,geetanjali,manoj,mohi and khasla -- THANK U VERY MUCH FOR MAKING THIS EVENT POSSIBLE AND A GLORIOUS HIT. love to all the rest.missed u alot chugh - sung few lines of o maji re !!!

"I was not lazying or sleeping around (no pun intended) but like a good anaesthetist was working hard behind the scenes to make the whole operation successful !!!!!
Yes sure, many volatile and writiferous ( i could think of that only as writing equavalent of VOCIFEROUS) classfellows ( classfellows sounds - or rather reads - more decent than CLASSMATES) have been lying low (again - no pun intended). But i guess and hope that its the - you know what - before the storm.
Chinkoo Singh - gave ample demonstration (and in this case it could be very aptly split into DEMON + stration, he was standing in the midst of a crossing and making wake up calls to people well past 12 midnight !!!) of what to expect at the meet.......we had lots of fun and laughter at the expense of other peoples sleep !!! But all the Ludhiana guys need a wake up call, no cheques, no photographs except for Lovneesh, Tinny and Dinesh Garg. Kya ho raha hai bhai?
Mohi: The new found Mirza Ghalib of the class !!!! (now look at word CLASS - last three letters make it ASS, you add L and it becomes LASS - the beauty - and if you add C - it becomes class !!! - and sure Mohi has added much more to the word) And he claims all the lines, couplets, shairs - whatever you call it - his own work.....I am impressed !!! But wonder who the new inspiration is !!
Mann - I am happy to note that you are maintaining the good handwriting and also adding more color to it !!!!! It all reflects the inner desire to add more color to the function !!!
All the NRI friends : Common firangi friends.....I need all your pics quick and fast......email them to me gsbattu@gmail.com irrespective of the fact whether you will be able to make it to the meet or not, we want our souvenir to be complete, and send pics in MB size. Day B4 Yesterday Me & Sethi had an Evening round of Patiala. We found that preparations for REUNION-83 are going on at war level. I dont think,our Curators (Mohi,Kansal,Battu,Khalsa,Walia et all) will leave any stone unturned to make it a big Success by laying a Pitch,friendly 4 all & a High Voltage Drama 4 Spectators.
* Our Khalsa,an Asstt. Prof.,despite his busy Teaching Schedule,is performing d Morning-Evening Ardaas 4 success of Event and preparing His Talwaar also,to provide Fool Proof Security to..........
*We have suggested them again to release d Sketches of those who r still Missing.
* Yes,We have warned Walia not to go to Adalat Bazaar or in d vicinity of any Educational Institution,Coz, in d worst scenario,it will be easy 4 him to label it as a political Vendetta but will be very difficult 4 all of us to face d Police & Court-Kachehari in d midst of Our Celebrations.

On a sober note and taking que from Chinkoo's email, a significant number of our batchmates are no longer with us(Nanha,Epheraim,Balbir Kaur.....etc) We may start our proceedings on the reunion day, by remembering them or sharing our thoughts about them.I would also request Battu to mail their photgraphs so that a section can be dedicated to them on the gomco blog.

Chinkoo:I was thinking of nana today and the sorrow griped me from within - battu it would be really nice if we could do a memorial/honour his parents/do a message / remembrance on the invites or anything u feel IS apt. he was in deed a very nice guy and we all shall miss him -

Last time i saw nanha was in emergency of rajindra hospital. he told me...he said," i want to live"...every body tried hard...but then.

Yesterday i went to hostel . It is different now, few old trees are still there...perhaps they remember us...I tried to listen to old echoes...JEETEY...PIKKEY...MAMME...all silence... darshan is still running doctor's hostel mess. Bhola has passed away. Not many couples could be found walking down girl's hostel lane, they must have found other places. I passed by the mute Audi. he looks like a deaf father. i sat in his foot steps and chose to write in punjabi...in the memory of my lost friends...who once passed this way.

Mohi made the all important opening announcement on behalf of as he said - His Excellency, The Governor Kansal. One thing to be added is - those who want to have stay arranged will have to send slightly thicker cheques !!!! Send the moolah thick and fast !!!!!!!
Also please send the material for souvenir at the earliest...it should include all that we did after doing MBBS, latest apni photo, family photo, family description (including date of births, marriage, qualifications, jobs and so on) and also the medical procedures undergone !!!!!!!

Now that the organisation committee has finally woken up from its slumber and earnestly started the process of our reunion, let us all help their cause by confirming our participation. This may be a two step process, initially just sending a email here or informing Battu, Kansal or Mohi about our participation. The second step would be sending in the money.(We would request Mohi to publish a weekly updated list on Gomco yahoo groups so that we know who all are coming)

There are only about 55-60 of the batchmates are on Gomco yahoo group so we need to spread the word to all our batchmates who are no aware of the exact dates/contribution. Deepak has been meticulously building a contact directory nd that would be very handy now.

So friends lets spread the good word around and work for the success of this reunion.

To Jesbee (Battu ji) and et al,

Read each line Carefully

This is to state Most Humbly that I have first hand experience of organizing many a meet….including three state level workshops and one state level conference. One out of Several important Bottom lines remains the ability to get correct and complete addresses and in TIME (and a reliable courier with minimum drop rate and payment being made only on receipt of P.O.D.)

I AM A QUITE A SENTIMENTAL FOOL who was on the spree of collecting addresses. There is and there was no other intention. My only Intention was to help out ….help to whosoever is organizing the 25th meet …may be battu may be kansal or may be our xyz friend. The only other thing to prove wus may be was may be my little bit of expertise with computers but that wus also not intention but a hobby….as I like doing difficult things.

First I thought it was “my duty” to collect the complete addresses…but one of the very wise sage of the group rightly pointed out….to “reconnect” we need just “one valid email id” and “one valid-working-verified phone/mobile number” …so it dawned unto me…we just need these two things only.

But Somehow I am Disappointed coz….somehow Patiala Gang has chosen not to Submit the Data and press the “ignore” button….i don’t know why…I fail to understand…coz till now Battu and Myself have been on very very Good terms. But I Feel that without data it is sheer wastage of My time and Energy. Why so Battu…? If u feel the data and details has to there on some other website…then…it can be done…but then there is expenditure involved. WHO WILL BEAR THE COST…of a separate website with working database connectivity. And as I wus already paying for the same…for my personal web…..i thought why not experiment and put gomco data base online …which I did…and is still working but I am already contemplating to take it off (gomco data off from my personal space) the web…I might…whenever I get the urge to do it, I will do it.

People who have not posted any line have taken care to post few of their details. Thanx a lot to them

ORGANIZING something like this is way way beyond my Means now...i have to autosuggest myself to be away from a bit Melancholy. But it was pinching me…so i could not help myself but to post.

I believe I hearts of heart Raminder Bir and Chinkoo Singh wanted to organize (may be…may be…) “second leg” and “third leg” of this grand get-together…but somehow everyone wants somebody else to do this for them….IF U WANT IT TO BE A GRAND GRAND SHOW…why not give it so some “professional agency” ….? I always believe more the merrier…but sometimes we want don’t want to meet “all of the ging bang muck”….but for the 25th I believe one must not overlook the less privileged ones and extend invitation to ONE AND ALL…..and relieve the spirit of SUMMER OF 1983.

Puneet the Naseeruddin Shah of our batch( master actor)has been suggested to do a skit for our gomco meet by Mohi. He wants to present gomco as a character who was once prosperous and proud but eventually fell victim to mismanagement, neglect and indifferent attitude of lethargic beaureocracy and is desperately trying to maintain its injured pride."

Chinkoo also remembers his acting attempt at Shimla but the real Amrish Puri was "Jarasand" who is missing.... find him anyone for our group's sake!

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiii allllllllllllllll G&G/ L&G,

The first 20:20 match - The first meeting of our batch (or beating of our match) was held at (under)grounds (- basement-) of a hotel at Patiala. Three Amigos (TA) had worked as good curators and had prepared a smooth nice pitch, which was supposed to be a friendly pitch. But guys, it sure had a rough patch and produced many a bouncers !!!! Here are main highlights and sidelines---
1. In all 24 players participated - a good number to begin with - Amritsar heavyweights included RD, sethi, Mann, Tejinder, Nagpal
wild west was represented by JC, Klair, Rajesh, Pardeep
Chick chandigarhians - Honey, Mall, harbans
And home team by khalsa, walia, dinesh, pardesi, mathur, rekhi,mahesh jindal, geetanjali, ranjana (are u countting, dingy?) and TA.
Ludhiana team after confirming the entry, missed the flight. It will be fined its match fee and in case of repeat performance will be called monkey team.

2. first innings went off very well, no monkey-ya-teri-ma-ki stuff. It was all hunky dory tho there were no cheerleaders on the sidelines, all players missed that. Interval was very melodiously used by Mohi and Geetanjali, they sung beautifully.

3. dates for alumini were fixed as suggested by chinkoo and all.............last weekend of Dec.

4. Venue of course remains patiala. proposed prog - we assemble at 11 - 12 on saturday, have tea/coffee/snax - welcome note and honor teachers in audi followed by lunch with teachers. Group photo after lunch, followed by introductions in audi till 5 or 6. Then a break followed by gala dinner at 8. Next day brunch to relax and have informal interactions and of course then disperse.

5. So far so good..........but then came some bouncers and bodyline attack along with badlam over the pitch, when amount to be contributed was discussed. sethi and geetanjali ultimately played good umpires and suceeded in putting the lid on the wormcan. i think there were some shiv sena moles !!!!!!!...............issue still remains unresolved......and no judge, umpire, lawyer, date, venue has been fixed for the hearing as yet.

6. But friends............it sure was a good match, a good reunion, all were remembering pranks, jokes and dirty jokes and tricks they played on each other..........it was pure fun !!!!!!! we sure be looking forward to more such meetings..............

Opening statement of the Organising committee

Battu Mohi and Kansal have formed organising committee( on the pattern of organising committee for the commomwealth games) here is what they have to state:
hiiiiiiiiiiiii all G & G / L & G [guys and gals/ ladies and gentlemen - whichever u prefer ---- i am trying to reduce key strokes, coz somehow i got the notion that unnecessary typing contributes to global warming :-) ]

1. THE OPENING ANNOUNCEMENT - The ball has been set rolling and we sure will have a ball on our get together. Kansal sahib had sudden awakening this sunday morning and woke me up to declare that him, me and rommel mohi have to bear the burden (not as in beasts of burden) - wilfully and with pleasure. So guys here you have Three Amigos (TA) who constitute core group which will be working hard - hard core group (no pun intended plaese). Sir Sethi has broken his silence with the very auspicioius announcement, YESSSSSSSSSSS , first real down to business meeting will be held at Patiala on 3rd, Feb, Sunday 5 pm, dinner inclusive, all are supposed to be there.

2. THE MASCOT - I have decided (disclaimer - the views expressed here are purely of the writer and the channel doesn't subscribe to them, please agree/disagree at your own discretion) to make Sarkozy the chief guest or the mascot for our reunion. He has illustrated very well all that can be achieved - socially, not politically- at this stage of life and he has given a new meaning to 'hats off' by declaring 'turbans off' in France !!!

3. THE VENUE - It has to be Patiala only, how could anybody think of any other place? L & G, Patiala is no longer the same old KHADOOS place, it is almost New York now, though on a scale of 1000:1 in everything !!!

4. THE FOOD - everyone will get same finger licking, spicy, fried, well oiled, injurious to health food, irrespective of wether you are diabetic/hypertensive / cataractic / CAD ic / GBD / IBS or whatever. On our 50th yr reunion you will get boiled food, soup, multivitamin tabs, free dentures and walking sticks, standby ambulance - again irrespective of how many steps you can take unaided.

Saturday Morning registration at Patiala, followed by Lunch and Function in Audi evening dinner and cocktails next morning visit to classrooms and then those who wish to can move to the hills.

Harmeet:
A Friday evening at Patiala and a Saturday evening till Sunday lunch at Chail.

Deepak:
DEC. 26TH, 2008 [FRIDAY]….AT PATIALA…3pm to 4pm registration etc. followed by Tea. Followed by Formal Function with Teachers , Introductions, Presentations if any…and Tributes.etc. Followed by Dinner.
DEC. 27TH 2008. [SATURDAY] ….Morning….just get rid of ur hang over…and Move to the Class Rooms in one big group…visit to the Hostels in one big group, followed jaipal’s non –existent dhaba etc etc….Either depart here….or then if some really gregarious fellows want to move then Late Lunch at Chandigarh or Pinjore, and move up the hills preferably in a bus….(from Chandigarh) ….log into ur dens at Chail on Saturday Night.
DEC. 28TH 2008 [SUNDAY]….Breakfast, followed by some interaction amongst class fellows for that one last time…then lunch and then Hasta Maniana…till we meet again….!!!

Raminder:
I think we all should decide first about the venue of our meet:
Patiala or Elsewhere.Or both, ie a day in Patiala and then a sojourn in the hills.

The day, date, venue and everything needs to be decided very early, by a collective decision so that we can have maximum participation. The majority of class is concentrated in Patiala, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Nawanshahr and USA. Or as Battu said Khuh de Daddu's and non Daddus.

Nostalgic Notes on the Gomco group

Gomco group is buzzing with activity, mails are flying from all parts of the world. I am reproducing some of the interesting stuff for those who missed the mails and for those who are not a part of Gomco 1983 (to see what they are missing)

Dilpreet to Battu:
….”making your presence felt”…..it has been so wonderful reading your mail after a hard and long day…but a revelation has also dawned…I think I finally know who was the author of the interesting(!!!!!) posters put up on the walls….. am I right??????....only that in those formative years we could not see the humor hidden under the garb of nonsense…..thinking of the fuss we girls created that day….I cant forget chinkoos face in the D-hall when we people told him to give that poster and a Dorland dictionary to his sister or any girl and that she would blush!!!....also the nice long lecture Dr Thapar gave you all…..what fun….

But I tell you that nothing like patiala and if given an oppurtunity, i would definitely settle in Patiala.
Read the book by Coelho, 'The Alchemist'. Story of a man, who goes all around the world for money, career, girl etc and ultimatley returns to his hometown dejected and lost. Then the twist, he gets it all at his own place and PLUS peace of mind.

Simmi on reunion:
It was heartwarming to go through the MEGA PLAN that is being put together for the reunion. Already looking forward for it. Every time I read the message I can feel the warmth of good old times

The re-awakening of Battu

Finally the Great Battu woke up from his slumber during which he had this great vision of our batch. He has classified it into six categories(Henceforth refered as Battus classification)

The batch can be divided in different categories based upon many parameters:
1. Brand Ambassadors: Those who considered brand GOMCO to be hep enough to let loose on unsuspecting international public and settled in all parts of world.
2. Non Conformists: Those who are trying to establish some logical relation between MBBS and police, postal, revenue services etc.
3. The Rooted Ones: or what rustic people call - khoo ke daddu (frogs of the well) who were born in india, studied in india, married and settled in india - the worst form being, replace india by patiala.
4. Flighted ones: Those who travel to New York, Tronto, Russia, Spain, Antarctica or other places that I visited only in the atlas.
5. Hoppers: those who travel to Sangrur, Ludhiana, Bathinda, or if feeling really energetic - to Delhi !!!!
6. CLT - those earning CLT - crores or lacs or thousands.

More thoughts and more comraderie

It is heartening to note the kind of 'for the batch' feeling we all had within us. This is now bursting out like molten lava. The gomco group is having so many confessions that I am too tempted to post them verbatim in the blog.(in case of anyone being offended, the text with be deleted, after all the blog is about sharing and not offending)

Puneet waking from slumber says in very poetic manner,"A flood of memories - trying to relive them - the eternal human desire to "beeti hui galiyon se - phir se guzarna" to borrow Gulzar's ex-pression.

The site is alive with the thought of reunion. 25 years - 25 long years - I am left wondering where all the years flew by. I feel I am still at Gomco - trying to learn this vast field of medicine - does not feel like I have mastered even a fraction. Feels like eternal prepratories but without any definite exam date. Paradigms that I think are absolutes one day are then challenged and often proven wrong - the knowledge becomes stale before I master it. Age of Information overload."

On the reunion he adds,"Over all our batch has done quiet well (I wanted to say - Despite some of our teachers - but that will be rude and thankless attitude). Well atleast we were given the basics that gave us the spring board to launch so I should be thankful for that.

What are group's thoughts about organizing a small educational and cultural activity prior to the celebrations. Deepak - you can present your innovative technique of surgery! Chugh is doing some work in the exciting field of EP and he can give us a small presentation about the innovations in his field! Tinny about the Ortho procedures he is garnering his accolades for! I mean we can invite all to present whatever they think is cutting edge or educational."

Chinkoo has an equally 'from the heart' confession on this,"lovely going through the note that u had written - so keep writing in smaller note but more frequently. Some of the words u used in ur note were damm tough to translate so thought must be a real difficult words in hindi.U were most definately hugely talented and equally good in studies - and to tell u the truth me and jugnoo never used to like u becoz of that - i mean how can someone be so good and that to in soooooooo many things."

Deepak after having posted the potentially explosive 'Old Ladies' comment has come out with equally philosophical rejoinder,"Folks it is very difficult to understand Me…here are few more lines to clear any…MISS-UNDER-STANDING….

Few of my acquaintances are getting philosophical…..so me tooooo…. ;-)

One of My loved philosophies....is “NO FRIENDS AND NO ENEMIES.”….
old school mates, classmates and batch mates are like old wine…u unnerstan that….to me they are not friends…but something which is much better than that….Acquaintances which happened by chance….but not made to happen by hook of some crook….!!!
Today’s so called Friendship is just a mutual convenience or our endeavor to connive…or undermine or outsmart…whatever….!!! So when I mention “old ladies”….they are not exactly my sisters….but when their kids call me “mamaji”….i don’t mind…( few
exceptions….might be there..)… (hey where is Mandy….sidhu…Malhotra…)…..so to ladies…who happen to read the previous email and as well this email…..it is just my style…and no lascivious intentions…. [for the time being…. ;-)…..OKAY…all right partner….!!! (in chinkoo’s lingo…)

Dilpreet has defined 'poignant':We all have children…but it’s a very different …poignant??.....feeling when one talks to an old friends child… I am sure you all can relate to the feeling I am talking about…felt very warm and nice towards Mehak

Well so much is happening, old bonds and ties being renewed, new ones being forged. The present looking back at the golden past, trying to relive the golden carefree days once again with people who were total strangers in 1983 and who became close confidants in 1987...This is what the 25 year reunion is all about.

And as Puneet says," Some names that crop up in the conversations here and are not contributing yet - Balram, Battu, Kansal, Chugh, Sethi, Honey - will be great to hear your voices too. It has been a longtime since we all heard from each other."

Reunion thoughts bring Gomco group alive

The the very thought of being able to meet all or most of the batchmates has resulted in a wave of nostalgia. Some people are suddenly trying to recollect who was 'Simpy' or what was the full name of 'Bangia'. The person having the mobile number of 'Trishal' has the most prized piece of information and other are begging for the number. And rememeber this is only the begining....

A number of suggestions have flown in as; taking lot of photographs, making a list of emails and telephone numbers, visiting old hostel ans class rooms, eating at the cafe. Some quick follow up action has also taken place and Deepak has prepared a list for collection of names/tel. nos/ emails/ adresses.

On a more serious note the venue needs to be finalised. There is a choice between a weekend sojourn at Chail or at Patiala (in the college). When we had a meeting at Chandigarh we had zeroed down to Chail but the response on the gomco yahoo group indicates that quite a few people want the reunion to be at Patiala. May be we can express our views here and reach a consensus quickly.

So pour in suggestions and the ideas can take shape.

Silver Anniversary Plans rolled-out

A informal meeting was held in Chandigarh on 21st December to finalise the plans for a 'Batch-reunion' in 2008. About 12 batchmates participated and initial plans were chalked out.
The dates for reunion were fixed as 27th and 28th December 2008 (Saturday & Sunday)
